Quilmes The Home of the Calchaqui

Latin America

Quilmes,
Argentina

The ruins of Quilmes on the Calchaqui mountainside give an insight into the Santamariana culture and the Calchaqui tribe who lived in the area from around 800AD.

They managed to resist the Inca but eventually fell to the Spanish conquerors in 1667 after fighting them for 130 years.

As well as stone houses, you can see paths, courtyards and a reservoir at Quilmes.

The Calchaqui site of Quilmes is one of Argentina's most important precolumbian settlements.
