Although it was officially adopted in 1906, the flag of Costa Rica has been in use since 1848.

The design of the Costa Rica flag was based on the French flag and the ideals of the French Revolution.

The official state flag of Costa Rica includes the Costa Rica Coat of Arms. It is not uncommon to see the flag without the Coat of Arms which is the national flag of Costa Rica.

The colours of the Costa Rica flag are very important. Blue represents the sky, opportunities, intellectual thinking, perseverance, eternity and religious and spiritual desires. The white colour is symbolic of happiness, wisdom, clear thinking, happiness and peace. The warmth of the Costa Rican people, the blood shed in their persuit of freedom, their love of life and generousity is portrayed by the red colour in the flag of Costa Rica.
