The Guatemalan flag is representative of the land between two seas.

Vertical stripes became the basis of the Guatemalan flag in 1871, to distinguish the flag from those of other countries in Central America.

In the centre of the Guatemalan flag, in the white stripe is the Coat of Arms of Guatemala which features the Quetzal bird, crossed rifles, crossed swords and olive branches. The white stripe represents peace.

The Quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala and signifies freedom. The weapons are Guatemala telling the world that the country will defend itself if the need arises and the olive branches are symbols of peace. The date 15th September, 1821 is when >Central America became liberated from Spain.
