Ecuador Flag and How To Recognize It

Ecuador flag

The Ecuadorian flag had been in existence since 1860, but in 1900 the Coat of Arms was added to it, to make it the flag we see today.

Francisco Miranda designed the Ecuadorian flag and attributes the colours chosen to a conversation he had had with the German writer, Goethe about Goethe's theory of primary colours.

The colours of the Ecuadorian flag are associated with the following: Yellow represents the country's natural resources and mineral wealth. It was also symbolic of the Greater Colombia Republic. Blue represents the ocean, sky and freedom from Spain. Red is for the courage shown and the blood lost by those who fought for Ecuador.

The flag of Ecuador is very similar to the flags of Columbia and Venezuela as the three were united as the Greater Colombia Republic.
